Slowly February is turning to March. It means spring is around the corner. Winter seining on lake Puruvesi is at all time high, ice conditions are reflective of the very warm winter, but still crews are out. A 40 minute documentary film will be released online in the spring about this unique boreal professional fishing community.
Internationally, Snowchange teams from communities and from the HQ will head to British Columbia, Canada in mid-March. Work with the Tahltan representatives focuses on revitalisation of traditional knowledge in the villages. We will also have an excursion to the Elhwa River system in the Washington state, where large-scale hydropower stations have been removed to allow the Pacific Salmon to return!
Next week community meetings and workshops will be held in Inari, Sevettijärvi, Nesseby, Utsjoki and Vuotso as a part of the CBM work of Snowchange. We continue to work with the Nordic IPBES process with the report slated for a summer release.
Domestically the ecological restoration of river Jukajoki is also in high gear. New wetland units have been created in early 2017 and more progess takes place weekly. Expect major newscast in mid-March!
