Summer Opens With an Arctic Summit, Expansion in Koitajoki

Juurikkasuo peatland restored.

Summer is here. Snowchange co-organises and participates in the Arctic Passion General Assembly in the Sámi home area, Inari in June. Koitajoki Rewilding expands significantly. Several Indigenous delegates arrive in the HQ and we welcome Thomas Miller, the film maker back to North Karelia for the upcoming Koitajoki documentary.

Between 10th and 15th June a large Snowchange delegation is headed to the Sámi home area to take part in the Arctic Passion General Assembly. During this week we will release the Event Databases of Indigenous Knowledge, collected over the past 4 years and curated by the people to the public. Unique materials will come from

  • Gwichin home area, Canada
  • Tahltan home area, Canada
  • Western Greenland
  • Faroe Islands
  • Skolt Sámi area, Finland
  • Khanty, Kolyma and Ponoi areas, Russia (based on the pre-2022 War materials)

Additionally rewilding work will expand in ICCA forest of Altto-oja, and community meetings will be held in Sevettijärvi, Skolt Sámi area.

Koitajoki Rewilding and Restoration work has received substantial new support. The Endangered Landscapes and Seascapes Programme has provided substantial new funding to last until 2027. The key components of the expanded work will include

  • Up t0 2500 hectares of peatlands to be restored
  • Several streams for trout, whitefish and grayling to be restored
  • River Guardian programme to be expanded and full art residencies created
  • Documentary films and community events
  • Support for the context of wild forest reindeer work in Koitajoki
  • Boreal forest restoration pilot work

We will report on these actions more towards September.

The expanded Koitajoki work will support the river seining on Koitajoki – a unique practice.

In early June we welcome delegates from the Tahltan, Huron-Wendat and Gwichin Nations to North Karelia. Additionally mid-month film maker, artist Thomas Miller will arrive for completion of the first Koitajoki documentary film. Check back soon for further news in June!
